In January of 2015, I swore off eating so much food containing added sugars and preservatives. I committed myself to eating natural and less-processed foods. In the summer of 2015, I started going to the gym regularly 4-5 times per week. In January 2016, I began tracking my calorie intake. I went from a whopping 240 lbs. in the summer of 2015 to my current 185 lbs (December 2016). No it’s not a crazy drastic change in a short amount of time. It’s taken me a lot of tracking, work, sweat, tears, and time to get to this point. I’m not at my goal yet, but I plan on just plugging through to get there. My point is this: I didn’t go on some gimmicky diet fad. I had to completely change up my eating and lifestyle habits. Lifelong changes can’t be made through eating only bacon and brussels sprouts for a week then going back to drinking Pumpkin Spice Lattes and sneaking some Chick-fil-A in the car (more on this later).
My Fitness Pal is the app I’ve been using on my iPhone 6Plus for the past year. It’s got tons of different types and brands of foods on there. I’ll go on it for a couple months pretty gung-ho, then I’ll jump off, and then back on again just to make sure that my portions are correct and I’m not over-snacking. I’ve set my daily intake at 1,600 calories per day.
I’ve recently been using matcha to help boost my metabolism and for the crazy amounts of antioxidants. Here is the MatchaDNA from Amazon that I’ve been using. I’ll put it in my morning smoothie with some frozen banana, vanilla protein powder, and some unsweetened cashew milk, or lately I’ve been making it iced with some lemon and mint (this is my new fave).
Every time I come back from the gym I make sure to have at least 20g of protein to help me repair my muscles that I’ve torn to shreds during my workouts. I’ve tried a few different whey protein powders. So far this is my favorite and tastes the best with very little sugars or sweeteners.
iFOOD real has been one of my go-to websites for clean-eating recipes. Even some of these have extra butter, sugar, and sweeteners, so I pick through. I’m a big fan of the black bean brownies and apple cinnamon spice muffins. They are sweetened with natural applesauce and dates.
